Scoring a film is fun and fulfilling.
The dialogue and action tell you what the characters are thinking and doing, but the music tells you what they are feeling in that moment.
I often start with just showing up to a blank slate which could sometimes be nerve-wrecking. But as I consider each aspect of the scene, the music automatically starts taking shape.
My expectations in the beginning are that it may not be perfect. I just show up to my music making it such an immersive and fun experience.
But it also could quickly become chaotic, overwhelming and messy. To begin with, there are lots of components to work with. There is a story, characters, action, emotions, visuals, location, costumes and so on and so forth. Each of them offers hints to create the music for a scene of a film.
Getting a complete narration of the film and watching the visuals already shot definitely helps to interpret the music for the film.
What kind of approach do you take before starting a new project ?
